Amid the controversy sparked by president Bola Tinubu’s appointment of two APGA members into positions in his government, a governorship aspirant of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Sir Paul Chukwuma has defended the president's decision, saying appointment is his prerogative
Tinubu had approved the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, a life board member of All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA), Mr Mark Okoye, as Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, South East Development Commission.
The appointment sparked controversy in Anambra state, with many arguing that President Tinubu was more comfortable working with the state ruling APGA than APC, and would likely support governor Chukwuma Soludo’s re-election in 2025 against his party (APC).
But Chukwuma at a media interaction with media personalities in his country-home Umueri, Amambra East Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra state, on Saturday, December 14, 2024, dismissed such allegations.
The governorship hopeful argued that president Tinubu was only being a father to all in his quest for inclusivity and national unity.
He maintained that as long as those appointed are eminent and competent citizens of Anambra state, the focus should be on delivery of their assignments and the overall wellbeing of the Southeast.
The philanthropist stated that other than criticising the choice of the president, he should be commended for looking beyond party affiliation and moving to change the winner takes it all syndrome in our politics.
“So, the President should be commended for appointing our credible people in his cabinet. He is not only appointing APGA members as some persons alleged. He has appointed other qualified APC members and none politicians into key positions in his cabinet. We commend him for that, and will support him in all he is doing for peace and development of Anambra and Nigeria,” he stated.
The APC chieftain also dismissed rumours of an APC-APGA alliance, reaffirming that the APC is focused on building grassroots support to win the governorship position in the 2025 elections.
"Appointment is appointment, but when it comes to election proper, APGA will be APGA and APC will be APC", he added.
Chukwuma, who further commended APC members in the state for their commitment and grassroots mobilisation, urged them to look at the bigger picture for the South-East politically.

A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has come into effect hours after United States President Joe Biden said a proposal to end the “devastating” conflict had been reached.

While announcing the agreement on Tuesday night, Biden said the fighting across the Lebanese-Israeli border will end, adding that the ceasefire agreement was designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities.
He added that civilians on both sides will soon be able to safely return to their communities and begin to rebuild their homes, their schools, their farms, their businesses and their very lives.
